IDL 7.1 Download and Installation Instructions
These instructions describe the process of downloading and installing
IDL 7.1. Click on one of the links below to jump to the section of
interest:
Installing on Windows
Before you begin:
- There are two installation packages:
idl711win32_setup.exe
for 32-bit Windows systems
idl711win64_setup.exe
for 64-bit Windows systems
Note
If you have a 64-bit Windows system, use the 64-bit installation package. It includes both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of IDL. |
- The installation
program will un-compress files to a temporary space on your system
drive. There must be sufficient space (500 MB) on your system drive
before the installation process can begin. After installation, IDL 7.1
requires approximately 380 MB of disk space.
- Windows XP and Vista are supported. (On 32-bit Windows XP systems, XP Service Pack 2 is required.)
- You need
Administrator privileges to install IDL. If you do not have such
privileges, the installation process will fail because it cannot modify
the system configuration.
Installation Instructions
To download and install IDL:
- Click on the link to download IDL 7.1.
- In the Save As dialog, specify a location to save the executable file you are downloading (
idl711win32_setup.exe
for 32-bit Windows or idl711win64_setup.exe
for 64-bit Windows) and click Save.
- After the download is complete, go to the location where you saved the
idl711win32_setup.exe
or idl711win64_setup.exe
file and double click on it to begin installing IDL.
- Click Next to begin the installation process.
- Read and accept the license agreement.
- Choose the destination folder. The default installation path is
C:\Program Files\ITT
- Select the features to install. Typical installation features are pre-selected.
- If you selected to install DICOM Network Services, you will be prompted about automatically starting the Network Services.
- Begin the installation. Click on Next from the Start Copying Files dialog.
- After installation, you are given the opportunity to license IDL. Licensing information for IDL 7.1 is provided here.
- Release notes are included along with the IDL 7.1 installation, but see the IDL web site for late-breaking information.

Installing on UNIX
Before you begin:
- IDL 7.1 requires approximately 675 MB of disk space.
- If you plan to install IDL in a public directory, be sure you have root (or similar) permissions before running the installer.
Installation Instructions
To download and install IDL:
- Choose a place to install IDL on your system and change to that directory. The default installation path is
/usr/local/itt
.
If you need to create the directory, be sure you have root (or similar) permissions, and issue the following commands:
- Select the
appropriate download link for your UNIX platform. Click on the link to
download IDL 7.1. The IDL installation file is a compressed archive;
save it in the directory in which you are installing IDL (
/usr/local/itt
by default).
- Unpack the archive. First uncompress the file by entering:
then untar the file:
where platform
is the platform name for your platform.
- Now execute the installation program by entering the command:
After the IDL installation distribution has been verified, you will be prompted to execute the install command. Enter y to continue the installation.
Read the license agreement. If you accept, enter y
to continue with the installation. Follow the on screen instructions to
install and set up IDL product environments and symbolic links.
- If your platform
supports DICOM Network Services, you will be asked if you want the
network services to start automatically at boot time. If you will not
be using DICOM Network Services, enter n.
- After installation, you will need to license IDL. Licensing information for IDL 7.1 is provided here.

Installing on Macintosh
Before you begin:
- IDL 7.1 requires approximately 400 MB of disk space.
- Mac OS 10.5.1 (or later) is supported.
- The Apple X11 Window System must be installed from the Mac OS X CD-ROM (it is not installed by default).
- If you plan to install IDL in a default directory (
/Applications/
), be sure you have administrator privileges before running the installer.
Installation Instructions
To download and install IDL:
- Click on the link to download the full version of IDL 7.1. Make note of the location to which you are downloading the ZIP file.
- If the ZIP file does not unpack itself automatically, double-click on the
idl711mac.zip
file to unpack it. Unpacking the file will create a folder named idl711mac
.
- Open the
idl711mac
folder and double-click on the Install icon to begin the installation.
- Read the Software License Agreement and click on Next to continue.
- Select the installation folder. The default installation directory is
/Applications/
, under which the installer creates the itt/idl71
directory. To modify this location, click on Choose. The path you specify must not contain any spaces in the folder names. Click Next to begin the installation.
- Select the install set. Choose IDL to install the full version of IDL or Custom to customize the packages to install.
- Confirm the install settings and options.
- Click Install to begin the installation.
- If you selected to install DICOM Network Services, you will be prompted about automatically starting the Network Services.
- After installation, you are given the opportunity to license IDL. Licensing information for IDL 7.1 is provided here.

Licensing
On Windows platforms, the IDL installation program prompts you to run
the License Wizard after IDL has been installed. If the License Wizard
is already started, skip to the next section.
To start the Licensing Wizard after the installation program has finished, do the following:
Windows
Select Programs → IDL 7.1 → License Wizard from the Start menu.
UNIX
Note
You must be logged in as root or an administrator, or have write permissions on the licensing directory, to license IDL. |
- Set up your
environment. Before running the licensing wizard, you must define
several environment variables used by IDL. You can use predefined setup
files included with IDL to define these variables.
For C shell:
For Korn shell:
For Bash shell:
where ITT_DIR is the main installation directory for IDL.
- Start the Licensing Wizard. To start the License Wizard, enter
ittlicense
at the UNIX prompt.
Mac OS X
Double-click on LicenseWizard in the main installation directory for IDL.
Retrieving Your License Key
The License Wizard allows you to retrieve your license directly from
the ITT Visual Information Solutions licensing web site. To retrieve
your license:
- Select Activate a license using the internet.
- Click Next. The licensing wizard will launch a web browser and open the ITT Visual Information Solutions licensing web site.
- Enter your username and password and click Submit. Follow the instructions on the web site to generate your license key.
- After you
generate your license key, your IDL 7.1 license information is
displayed in the License Wizard. A copy is sent to your electronic mail
address.
Note
On some platforms, the license information is not automatically
transferred to the License Wizard. If the information is not
transferred, copy it from the web browser window and paste it into the
License Wizard. |
- Click Next to write your license into the correct location on your computer.
- The licensing wizard will display the location of your license file. Click Exit to close the wizard. Your copy of IDL 7.1 is now licensed and ready to use.
