Glast Glossary

The Glast glossary is a set of records in SLACSPEAK that are maintained by Chuck Patterson and Mark Arndt in the GLAST project. They use this glossary for acronyms and terms within the GLAST project. Scientists and administrators in the project can add terms using a web form, vetted and checked by Chuck and Mark.

The search pages are embedded in the GLAST pages, but an example lives here: http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/glast/

In the GLAST pages, a quarter sized window opens up.

Searching and Sorting

The file is selectable in SPIRES as sel glastgloss

The index used by the web application is GLASTWORD which is a word index of Terms, Acronyms, and Explanations all rolled into same index.

The unique thing the glastglossary offers is a context based sort, where if the term you search for is an actual term it will sort in front of records that only have the term in the description or explanation. This is done by sorting on a virtual element called GLAST.SEQ which evaluates the $searchinfo command and assigns a numeric value depending upon if it finds the term whole in the TERM, FULL.TERM, or EXPLANATION in that order. There is a discrepancy between the names of the fields in the GLAST displays and forms and how they are named in the file, and in SLACSPEAK. TERM is ACRONYM in GLAST, FULL.TERM is TERM in GLAST, and EXPLANATION is DEFINITION in GLAST. Wildcard is *. If the search expression is itself a term, the rest of the result is hidden, but can be clicked on to open up in the results page.

These GLAST terms appear in SLACSPEAK searches, but non GLAST terms do not appear in glastgloss searches (there's a search-mod in glastgloss of TAG=GLAST)

Additions and Corrections

The form to add terms is embedded in the GLAST pages, linked from the search page.

http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/glast/glastformpl.html is the entry form where users can add new terms or suggest corrections. TERM, EXPLANATION, AND CONTACT.EM are required fields

The form does the following:

  • sends a POST to www.slac.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/form-mail.pl

This is a SLAC perl script that accepts the data and emails the result to the 'username' field in the form. The custom field mapping is here:

/afs/slac/www/spires/glast/glast_msg_upd.file which puts the form fields into fields that is formatted to be spires input. This formatting is basically a one line string that inserts the data into the string by the element or field name. form-mail.pl sends a response to the user based upon the required email field entered. /u/ls/slaclib2/.procmail is the script that is invoked when slaclib2 is emailed by the form-mail.pl. See

http://www.slac.stanford.edu/slac/www/tool/form-mail/doc/form-mail.html

  • form-mail.pl returns a response to the user that is contained in this file:

/afs/slac/www/spires/glast/glast_resp_msg.file

  • .procmail looks for subject in the slaclib2 email that has GLAST in it, then sends the file to another perl script

/afs/slac/g/library/bin/glast.pl

This script trims out the excess stuf in the slaclib2 email and forwards the content to the spires webservice (see WebServices), spires:5095, calling the protocol GLAST in Spires webservice.

  • WEBINPUT is the spires file that accepts the POST data from the server. In GLAST'S case, the webinput fomrat is looking for a field called FORMAT=AMPERS which separates out the elements and puts them into element PLACE2 in WEBINPUT (instead of the usual INPUT element).

The GLAST frame in the DEFAULT format of WEBINPUT then outputs a standard spires record that loads into glastglossary. All added terms come with TAG=HIDE so they don't immediately appear in the glossary.

glastgloss record review

Chuck gets an email from Spires Webservice telling him a new record has been added, and a link to that record. He can click on that link, it opens a form like this:

http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/find/glastgloss/wwwreview?key=58556

(the tag would read HIDE instead of GLAST, but I wanted to link to a record that wouldn't go away)

on that review screen is a link to update the record which brings it here:

http://www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/find/glastgloss/wwwupd?key=58556

This form is only useable at SLAC, Chuck and Mark then can review the record, and update directly back into the database. This form does not go to form-mail.pl, but goes directly as a POST to spires:5095 as above, and goes through the regular T.MERGE Webservice protocols.

glastgloss admin

In addition to the record review process above, Chuck and Mark have access to www.slac.stanford.edu/spires/glast/admin/

This is a search page for admin work in the file. They can review all their terms, modifiy particular records, and remove terms by changing tag from GLAST to HIDE. The terms don't get removed, just hidden from public view.

If they want records cleaned out, they can ask Mike to do that, who goes into spires interactively.

future

The glastglossary should be supported by SLAC library as long as Spires is supported. We don't see it going away in the near future, and is part of the SLACSPEAK application owned by Jean Deken in Archives.
